Saturday Sweets: The Salty Donut + Lee Schrager

Sorry if you missed out this past weekend trying the special Cheddar Cornbread donut, but make sure you visit The Salty Donut for other awesome artisan donuts.

My love for donuts is real, and very well known if you follow me or have ever read my articles.  Since The Salty Donut’s debut during Art Basel 2015, I have been back almost weekly and I still can’t seem to get enough.

This weekend Lee Brian Schrager, Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival Founder and Director, is teaming up with The Salty Donut in the making of a breakfast-inspired donut in celebration of Schrager’s third cookbook America’s Best Breakfasts, for their first ever actual “salty” donut and it’s for a great cause.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.  Schrager and his partners will double the donation by matching The Salty Donut’s total.  Donuts for a good cause?!  Count me in!

I know I said it was a savory donut and this is Saturday Sweets – but don’t worry, this is the donut you never knew you needed!  Chef Max Santiago hits it out of the park for this one – in his words it’s “what would happen if his famous cornbread recipe and his vanilla cake donut had a baby.”

The Cheddar Pancetta Cornbread Donut is actually as sweet as it is savory!  The donut is a cheddar cornbread base stuffed with pancetta and jalapeno, coated in a honey butter glaze, and topped with charred corn and candied jalapeno.  To be completely honest, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this as a donut, but one bite in and I wasn’t sure how I lived so long without it in my life.  As soon as you bite into the donut your mouth is coated in the sweetest, silkiest honey butter, then you get salty crunchy pancetta followed by the subtle heat of the jalapeno and you realize, life is now perfect.

This very special donut will only be available this weekend, June 25th and 26th.  The first 10 people to order will receive a signed copy of Schrager’s new cookbook, America’s Best Breakfasts, featuring some of the best breakfast recipes from restaurants across the country.  I already have my copy and I love it!  If you’re starting your Saturday morning reading this article, you should probably get into your car immediately and stand in line for this donut.  I recommend pairing it with their Cold Brew Palmer, better known as, The Salty Donut’s take on a classic Arnold Palmer. It’s made with their homemade lemonade and replaces the sweet tea with Relentless Roasters ‘Awaken’ Cold Brew and simple syrup served over ice.  It’s a match made in heaven and I guarantee it’s worth the wait – who knows, you might even run into me standing in line as well!
