New for Miami 2017: Brunch Fiesta at Olla

There’s no doubt that brunch has become Miami’s favorite meal in the last year.  Sunshine while eating outdoors, day drinking, and breakfast foods - it really doesn’t get much better than that.  There’s a decent list of contenders in the brunch scene these days, but in early December we got one that, dare I say, might be my current favorite spot for brunch.

Scott Linquist, you may know him of Coyo Taco fame, opened Olla (pronounced Oi-Ya) on Lincoln and the bay side of Alton Road.  This is not your typical "taco joint", as Chef Linquist creates authentic Oaxacan Mexican fare in an upscale, yet cozy spot.  Think four types of mole rather than those Combination plates.

When the words “Mexican” and “brunch” are used together I instantly crave Chilaquiles and Huevos Rancheros, Olla does not disappoint when it comes to these classic dishes, but you can also expect plenty of exciting twists on old favorites.

Take the Ahumado jar for example, it’s a hyped up version of an egg salad with hot smoked salmon, hard boiled eggs, and crema tomatillo-poblano salsita, served with bolillo - which is a pillowy, perfectly toasted buttery type of bread.  I recommend starting with one of the jars - if you aren’t into smoked salmon, there’s a king crab option that’s equally delicious (and if king crab is your thing then come back for dinner and order the King Crab and Lobster Enchiladas).

The made-to-order Guacamole is also a must, it’s got just the right amount of lime, salsa, cilantro and spicy kick to it.

Once you are ready to move onto the main event, there’s almost too many options to choose from so your best bet is probably to order a few and share them with the table.  Be prepared for hearty portions, I eat with my eyes and always come out in a heavy food coma.

The menu is separated into sections including Verde ( think salads and greens ), Tortillas, Bollilo Tortas ( there’s that amazing bread again as Mexican sandwiches ), Huevos and Dulces, Ollas ( their namesake, meaning Pots ), and Masas ( NixtaMal ).  You really can’t go wrong with any combination of plates.

The proteins that can be added to the dishes are even fun - duck barbacoa, chorizo, pulled chicken, to name a few.

If you are in the mood for something sweet, then the Torrejas are meant for you - Mexican french toast, sweet plantains, caseta, and whipped cream.

Let’s not forget one of the best parts of brunch - the day drinking!  Olla is ready for you with a $30 bottomless supplement special during brunch featuring classic margaritas, mimosas, micheladas, and bloody maria’s.  If you are looking for more than just a classic margarita, their gorgeous bar has it handled.  There’s a huge list of specialty margaritas and mezcal cocktails to satisfy tequila lovers of all levels.  Olla is all about the fiesta, featuring DJs spinning the back corner creating the perfect ambiance that you didn’t know you were missing.

Brunch is served all day Saturday and Sunday.  Happy Hour features $8- Margaritas, $5- cervezas, and 1/2 price guacamole. Or make sure you visit for Lunch and Dinner, which is served every day throughout the week and features even more authentic dishes. There’s no time for sleep in the kitchen at Olla and we are making the most of it.
