Saturday Sweets: The Year of The Donut

WARNING: This week's Saturday Sweets by Amber Love Bond may just make you skip the yogurt and soft boiled egg and head to the nearest bakeshop.

There’s no doubt about it - donuts are to 2016 what mini cupcakes were to 2011.  What was once a simple glazed treat has now turned into crazy topped, fun creations and flavor combinations that might as well be considered personal sized cakes you can get away with eating for breakfast, no judgement allowed.

Truthfully, I am totally on board! Baker’s Confession: Donuts are the only sweet treat I’ve never attempted in my own kitchen because I love them so much and never want to take the magic away.

If you follow any of my social media food adventures then you know all about my #donutgroupie fangirl love for The Salty Donut and my willingness to stand in line for their mouthwatering creations.

The Salty Donut may be the sprinkles to my cupcake but there are so many other options out there.  Gone are the days where Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts ruled the land, even though that “Hot and Ready” sign still makes my heart skip a beat.  It’s not hard to find these delicious treats in every flavor, shape, and size – but more impressively able to satisfy every dietary restriction!

This week Vine Communications hosted Miami’s first ever Donut Festival at Wynwood Yard.  Donut shops and bakeries from all over South Florida brought out some of their favorites for everyone to fall in love with.

Parlour Vegan Bakery in Plantation blew my mind with their adorable mini donuts.  Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch, Butterbeer, and Cake Batter all vegan and gluten-free but the taste and texture was so on point that these well trained taste buds of mine wouldn’t have known the difference had I not been told.

Beaker & Gray brought their Beet Donut to the table and it tasted just as vibrant as it looked.

Rhino Donuts in Boca Raton are worth the trip with their oversized soft and fluffy donuts.  I especially enjoyed when they torched my Crème Brulee donut right before my eyes.

YoNutz Gourmet Donuts & Soft Serve had what very well may be the best Smore’s Chocolate Cake Donut in the world.

Mojo Donuts took home the Golden Donut Trophy making them the fan voted “Best Donut” of the night.   A very exciting win after their recent announcement of a second location in Miami that will also feature fried chicken (and is dangerously located just minutes from my house)!

With all of the enthusiasm surrounding these shops, I think it’s safe to say the donut trend is here to stay so just give in and don’t fight it.  Take a cue from me and eat cake for breakfast! Have a Sweet Saturday!
