National Tequila Day! Celebrate Miami style

Grab some lime and salt, because it’s National Tequila Day!

Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, and has a deep and storied history. It was named after the small town of Tequila in a valley west of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico. There are 100s of varieties and several of them are known very well. Take Jose’Antonio Cuervo for example, he held the first license for manufacturing tequila thanks to the King of Spain.

A little Agave knowledge for you: Agave grows in a variety of ways.  Blue agave is grown in the highlands region and is larger in size and sweeter in aroma and taste.  Agave that is grown in the lowland regions have a more herbaceous fragrance and flavor. Much like legislation for bourbon and cognac, Mexican law states tequila is only tequila if it is produced within Jalisco and limited regions in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.  If the same ingredients are distilled anywhere else, it’s not tequila.

While most people enjoy tequila cocktails such as the margarita and tequila sunrise, a good tequila can be savored like a good whiskey.
