NYC Road Trip: Breakfast at Tiffany’s Blue Box Café by Daniel Boulud

May and June in New York City are a special time. The long winter and the soggy April showers give way to sunny days and warmer temps. New York City is a walking city, and on a perfect Spring day, I donned my pearls and a “little black dress” and headed into the city for a visit to the newly reopened Tiffany & Co on Fifth Ave. to check out the Blue Box Café by Daniel Boulud for my version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is a 1961 American romantic comedy film directed by Blake Edwards, adapted from Truman Capote's 1958 novella of the same name, and starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, a naïve, eccentric café society girl who falls in love with a struggling writer.

I am sure no one associated with the Oscar winning movie would recognize today’s gorgeous new six floor LVMH owned Tiffany landmark on the corner of Fifth Ave and 57th St.

After closing in 2019, the makeover took four years and transformed the iconic dark wood and stuffy Tiffany’s into a bright white marble, pale wood and rose gold showcase for diamonds, silver, gold, crystal, tabletop and glassware.

And it is spectacular with a curved mirrored staircase inspired by designer Elsa Perreti connecting each floor.

On the 6th floor overlooking both Fifth Ave and 57th Street is The Blue Box Café by Daniel Boulud. Open only a couple of weeks, reservations are hard to come by and made through Resy 30 days in advance. Walk-ins are welcome and we chose to sit at the bar at one end so we could see the entire restaurant and people watch.

It is hard to miss the colorful splashes on the floor and the many Tiffany blue boxes that are suspended from the ceiling adding a distinctive yet whimsical signature décor.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is priced at $59 and comes on a tiered silver platter with a flaky croissant, apricot Danish, buttery madeleine, yogurt parfait with raspberry coulis and granola, thinly sliced pineapple rosace with strawberry in vanilla and lime, a scrambled egg in a shell topped with caviar, and a glass of Golightly: a fresh juice of carrot, orange, pineapple, mango and ginger. It was enough for the two of us to share.

Another option is Holly’s Favorite at $34 which includes a croissant and madeleine, butter and jam, fresh orange juice and café, tea or chocolat chaud.

Afternoon Tea at $98 includes assorted tea sandwiches, scones, cookies and pastries and your choice of teas and a glass of champagne. A perfect afternoon stop after shopping in the neighborhood.

A Seasonal menu of items is also offered all day and can be added to your breakfast or tea menu and includes Coquille St Jacques with Maine scallops, Quiche Au Vert, Smoked Saumon with cucumber and dill and a bagel crisp, Tuna Carpaccio, a Wagyu Cheddar Cheeseburger or 5 oz Filet Mignon.

At our server’s suggestion we added L’Oeuf Doré, a soft egg wrapped in gold leaf and delicately placed on a kataifi nest with lemony asparagus.

Before spring turns into summer, make a plan to go into New York. See a show, go to a museum, shop Fifth Ave, and visit Tiffany’s and the Blue Box Café.
