Red Rooster and Lil GreenHouse provide meals for Lotus House "It Takes a Village"

The “It Takes A Village” Block Party on Saturday August 8th is the Lotus House Shelter for Women and Children's 3rd annual Back to School event where they provide vital resources to the community of Overtown.

Last year, the street in front of the shelter on NW 15th St was closed down and over 1,000 attendees enjoyed free food, music, bounce houses, face painting, water activities, and more.

Most importantly, the event provided vital health and back to school services like free immunizations, mammogram screening, EKG, eye exam screenings, and book bags filled with school supplies for the children.

With this year’s COVID19 crisis, unfortunately, the event will look different, but the team at Lotus felt that it was more important than ever to bring the community together as we all witness first hand the impact on our friends and neighbors in Overtown during the pandemic.

A “grab and go” meal will be provided from local restaurants, Red Rooster Overtown and Lil GreenHouse Grill, along with non-perishable food items, cookies, and book bags with school supplies. Guests will grab their items from each table, move on to the next and then exit the space for the next group to enter.

Chefs Max and Anthony of Red Rooster will be preparing a hearty Jambalaya with greens from their on-site Hammond Farms hydroponic farm and volunteers from Food Rescue US Miami will be on hand for the meal distribution.

All attendees will be asked to wait in line, socially distant, and with masks. Only a certain number of people will be allowed in the event space at a time and everything provided will be pre-packaged.

Immunizations & COVID-19 Testing provided by Jessie Trice Community Health System with appointments made by calling 305.637.6400.

Food Rescue US-Miami is proud to be able to support the Overtown community, Red Rooster Overtown and Lotus House as one of its sponsors.
