Taquiza Returns To South Beach And Is #StillGrinding

We just couldn’t wait for Taco Tuesday to feature the new Taquiza location on Collins at 13th Street. After what felt like an eternity to Taquiza fans since the original South Beach location closed over the summer due to the building being sold, a new and sparkling Taquiza has opened in a larger space just a few blocks south. The new location has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and a long bar to highlight the amazing signature cocktails that have been a draw in the Taquiza North Beach location second only to the fresh salsa, guacamole, blue masa totopos, and tacos.

We stopped in on Sunday to enjoy the $25 Bottomless Rum Punch and brunch and left fully satisfied that Taquiza was back on South Beach.

The menu is larger than the original SoBe spot and features some of the best items from the North Beach location. Over 12 different tacos are featured proudly at the top of the menu and include favorites like al pastor: achiote-marinated pork sliced and grilled with pineapple, camaron: grilled spiced shrimp and red cabbage slaw, and barbacoa: a braised brisket with cumin, chili and Modelo Negra.

Chicken and carne asada options are also available, but if you want to try something different, we recommend the chapulines: toasted adobo seasoned grasshoppers on guacamole, or the vegetarian option huitlacoche: Mexican corn with fresno chili and green onion. All are served with condiments of raw onions, lime, cilantro, red and green picante, and radish slices.

Before you indulge in the tacos, make sure to order the signature totopos and salsa. Puffy and hot, these hand torn blue masa chips are a treat dipped in the freshly made salsa or order a side of chunky guacamole, frijoles or queso.

It was still brunch, so we opted for an order of chilaquiles made with two sunny side up fried eggs on top crispy blue masa strips, salsa roja, and crema. Another breakfast option includes huevos a la Mexicana with scrambled eggs, salsa, frijoles, crema, cotija cheese and tortillas.

The drink and cocktail menu is creative and features plenty of rum, tequila, and mezcal cocktails in addition to traditional margaritas, micheladas, craft beer, sangria, soft drinks and juices, including a nitro hibiscus kegged tea from JoJo Tea.

The Sunday Bottomless Punch features a different rum each week, with this week’s recipe featuring Plantation Rum Xaymaca, Benedictine, Italicus liqueur, pineapple, lime, cinnamon, passion fruit and biitters.

Don’t wait until Taco Tuesday to head over to Taquiza, the Casa de Masa.
