About the Chef Andrew Scholarship Fund:

Chef Andrew Alessi had two very strong passions — culinary arts and the ocean. As a credentialed chef, he spent many hours preparing signature recipes and presentations for the kitchens of top Miami restaurants including 27 Restaurant at Freehand Miami and Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Andrew also spent many happy days diving among the beautiful reefs of Miami, The Florida Keys, and the Caribbean. Along the way he always collected any debris he saw attached to the reefs. He found great joy in helping others understand the wildlife and nature they were experiencing. He understood that the oceans are part of our important ecosystem and support the supply of delicious seafood that Andrew prepared in his restaurants.

In honor of Chef Andrew Alessi’s life and love of the ocean, Debris Free Oceans has created a scholarship in his memory. Debris Free Oceans is a volunteer-run organization that inspires local communities to responsibly manage the lifecycle of plastics and waste as part of a global initiative to eradicate marine debris from our beaches, reefs, and oceans. Each year, this scholarship will help support the extraordinary efforts of a student or intern who is providing scientific and/or physical efforts that focus on debris free oceans. The Chef Andrew Scholarship will promote a legacy to support the ideals he held so important and will also have a long-term impact helping clean up our oceans.
