Travel Thursday: Vacation Destinations You'll Be At By Lunch - Delray Beach Edition

Summer is here and so is the urge for a summer vacation — or two. Not everyone wants to hop on a plane and it takes way too long to drive out of Florida. Luckily, there are plenty of great 48 hour getaways you can get to by lunch time, complete with great food, family friendly fun, and gorgeous beaches.

All summer long, MIAbites will be featuring #TravelThursdays with easy to get to destinations and guides on how to make the most of your adventures. So grab your weekend bag and jump in the car and you’ll be there before you know it.

This week we're visiting: Delray Beach

If you’re looking for a quick beach getaway with a relaxed vibe, great food, and some delicious tiki drinks — then head just over an hour north to Delray Beach.

Once you're settled in take a walk down Atlantic Avenue, the city's main drag, where you'll discover shops, restaurants, bars, and live music. It's the kind of destination where as long as you're staying in the downtown area, there's no need for a car once you've arrived.

Where to stay: Crane’s Beach House

Skip the known name hotels on this visit and book your stay at Crane's Beach House. The family owned boutique hotel is situated inside lush greenery creating a private tropical escape. Stay in one of the luxury villas featuring a full kitchen, just in case you’ve got the urge to do some cooking while on vacation. Breakfast is complimentary and there’s a tiki bar that hosts an intimate happy hour. Located right off Atlantic Avenue, you’re only a block from the sand and two blocks from tons of fun entertainment, bars, and restaurants.

Where to eat: City Oyster and Sushi Bar

Conveniently located on Atlantic Avenue, you’ll find City Oyster and Sushi Bar. Grab a table outside to enjoy some people watching. The menu features a long list of both sushi and oysters, but also fresh seafood, steaks, pastas, and even salads for those trying to behave on vacation. Don’t miss out on the Lobster Tempura Roll with  Maine deep fried lobster tail, asparagus, avocado, scallions, masago, and spicy mayo. It’s both delicious and gorgeous. Stop in for brunch and take advantage of $15 bottomless mimosas.

Where to drink: Death or Glory

Nothing screams vacation like a tiki drink. When in Delray Beach, you’ve got to check out Death or Glory — if tiki drinks aren’t your style, don’t worry they’ve got it all. Step inside the historic Falcon House, a nearly 100 year old home, to enjoy cocktails and conversation with locals. Pick a stool outside at the rum bar that honors the rum runners of the 1920s. Keep it classic with a Mai Tai or try the Endless Vacation made with reposado tequila, grilled pineapple, ancho spices, Aperol, and lime. Stick around until the late night munchies kick in, the food at Death or Glory is just as delicious as the drinks.

What to do for fun: Silverball Museum

If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, check out the Silverball Museum in downtown Delray. It’s a pinball and arcade game museum where you spend the day or night honing your skills. Once you’ve paid for admission, all games are set to free play so there’s no need for coins or tokens. There’s a full food and drink menu available. Think $5 pizzas during happy hour, or cool down with a rootbeer float. Here you’ll find over 100 games that will keep the kids entertained or bring out the kid in you.

Delray Beach is easily one of the most overlooked gems in Florida, and for Miamians it’s just a short drive away. When the weekend travel bug hits, make sure to add this getaway to your list. Huge shout out to The Palm Beaches for showing us around Delray Beach!

Keep checking back every Thursday for the latest edition of Travel Thursdays with MIAbites, as we continue to supply you with exciting destinations you can be settled in by lunch time.
