Saturday Sweets: White Star Cafe and Bakery
A great deal has been written in the news about food allergies and the life-threatening dangers they pose to a large population. As we have become more aware of food allergies and more conscious of what we are eating, we are still in need of delicious dessert options that fit those needs and can still satisfy the sweetest of sweet tooth’s.
Enter White Star Café and Bakery, found off of Sunset Drive and 87th Avenue. This Kendall café is taking the area by storm. A husband and wife team that set out determined to build a safe environment for their son who suffered from severe food allergies.
The name White Star Café came from their desire to make a safe haven for those with dietary restrictions – a safe place for them to call home, “follow the white star and that’s where you’ll be”. They believe that great food is one of life’s greatest pleasures and everyone no matter what restrictions should be able to enjoy it, while knowing no shortcuts were taken, no preservatives were used, and only the best ingredients can be found in their treats. It took 5 years for the family to develop their recipes keeping in mind to specifically exclude: Milk (Casein), Eggs, Soy, Wheat (Gluten), Peanuts, Tree Nuts (except coconut), Fish, Crustaceans (a type of shellfish) Corn and furthermore, Artificial Colors, Preservatives or Flavors.
I stopped by White Star Café and Bakery a few weeks ago to check it out. I was very excited to see something different in that area, especially since I live right down the street. When you walk in you are welcomed by bright cheeky décor and a very friendly staff. Though they are a full service café serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we all know I was only there for the desserts! I was instantly drawn to the cases full of pretty treats just waiting for me to dive into.
Here you can expect an array of yumminess on any given day baked fresh daily by a wonderful team. Sweets include – cookies, muffins, petite cakes, tarts, cupcakes, cakepops, and even a case of homemade gelato.
I may or may not have sampled almost all of the gelato (okay, fine I did – order the Faux Nutella or the Raspberry Coco!) I’m a sucker for anything that looks like a chocolate dome so naturally I gravitated toward theirs.
The Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake with a hint it passion fruit gel inside placed on top of a crunchy chocolate cookie was exactly what I was hoping for. The Lavender Cheesecake is also a winner – light, sweet, and oh so creamy! There’s also a rotating list of gluten free breads. I was lucky enough to be there on a day when Apple Bread was on the menu. It was delicious and would have been made even more perfect with a scoop of their Vanilla Gelato.
White Star Café and Bakery is a very welcome addition to the Kendall area. A perfect spot for families to stop by for a nice meal made carefully with love followed by a delightful dessert! While you are further south than most of the hot spots that are on everyone’s radar – be ready to pay for the product you are purchasing. These ingredients are some of the best so don’t be deterred by prices you would expect to see in Brickell or South Beach. The Redondo family is determined to make this café a magical place with worry-free deliciousness!
