LAID Fresh: All Day Breakfast from the owners of KYU
When we asked Chef Michael Lewis of KYU what inspired him to open LAID Fresh, the new EGG-centric all-day breakfast spot just a block away, he responded, “I was hungry”. He admitted that by mid-afternoon in the kitchen at KYU, he craved breakfast and so with partner Steven Haigh, LAID Fresh was hatched.
When you walk into the combined former Dizengoff and Federal Donuts space, the first thing you notice is the restaurant’s sunny (side up) interior with bright yellow chairs that gets you thinking of eggs. There is even a table of Legos ( or LEGG-os), and a comfy couch with headphones for the ultimate chill out.
The result is an all day breakfast restaurant that uses the freshest eggs, makes their own potato brioche buns and made to order beignets, and serves local products, such as Panther coffee.
Most, if not all of their ingredients are locally sourced, and chosen with care. Eggs and chicken from Lake Meadow Naturals, greens from local farms like Harpke Family Farm, Teas from JoJo Tea, cheese from Mimmo’s Mozzarella, and juices from Expressed Juices.
We got to try a few of their egg sandwiches including the house made hot fried chicken sandwich, with lettuce, pickles, slaw and was my favorite!
A classic soft scrambled egg sandwich included bacon, brie and avocado. The sandwiches are all so good, with extra touches to make them special, such as hollandaise sauce or parmesan spread on the fluffy bun.
There is also an option to order “the Laid egg”, a lightly hardboiled egg on top of a crispy potato pancake “nest “with hollandaise sauce and a bacon marmalade. The marmalade adds a surprising touch of sweetness, that I enjoyed.
And don’t miss the freshly made beignets with plenty of powdered sugar.
Beverage choices are both alcoholic and non- alcoholic and include Expressed Juice’s ginger and turmeric shots that were fresh and tasted so good, Panther coffee and the alcoholic options, include mugs of mimosas and the cutest cans of Italian wines, such as the lime and elderflower spritz.
