Smart Bites: Urban Farming and a Healthy Café

In the quadrant between I-95 and The Dolphin sits the Allapattah “ Healthy” District, a mixture of sparkling glass medical centers and empty warehouses and lots.  On a corner of NE 20th visible with its bright green awning is Smart Bites, a small storefront café that is run by Mari Vila and features healthy soups, salads, burgers (including a Bison Burger!) wraps, sides and fresh juices.

Saturday Sweets: Tatiana Vernot of Bakehouse Brasserie

This week’s Saturday Sweets led us to Bakehouse Brasserie in SoFi because I needed to have a Nutella Croissant (and maybe some frosé) - I’m not the only one, right?!  Bakehouse is Miami Beach’s new hot spot for breakfast and brunch with French brasserie items like Croque Madame, Steak Frites, Crawfish Beignets and more, including some delicious pastries. 

While there, I got the chance to hang out with Pastry Chef Tatiana Vernot, who had been in since 4 am re-stocking the pastry case after a busy weekend. Although she has only been working professionally in kitchens for three years, Tatiana turns out all of the most delicious treats in Bakehouse’s pastry display.

Saturday Sweets: Chef Maria, Pubbelly Pastry Chef Extraordinaire

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard about the Pubbelly Boys and their amazing savory creations, but not everyone knows about their sweet secret weapon – Chef Maria Orantes.  Chef Maria is the Executive Pastry Chef for all of the Pubbelly restaurants, including their newest adventures downtown at PB Station and out to sea at Food Republic on Norwegian Cruise Line’s largest ship, The Escape.  

While she’s busy creating amazing recipes for the new spots, her heart still very happily belongs to her Sunday Brunch Dough Bar 305 found at the original Pubbelly Sushi location in Sunset Harbour.  Each week Chef Maria features around six different delicious donuts available just for brunch.
